Sturgeon City Environmental Education Center focuses on providing top-tier environmental and STEAM education while fostering a culture of curiosity and innovation in youths aged 1-18. They have been serving the community since 2000.

Sturgeon City has its origins in the successful Wilson Bay Initiative. The Wilson Bay Initiative by the City of Jacksonville was developed following the 1998 closure of the Wilson Bay Wastewater Treatment plant which had contributed to the degradation of the New River. The initiative used a collaborative arrangement of private and public environmental grant funds to seed environmental restoration efforts focused on improving water quality in Wilson Bay and helping bring life back to the New River. Youth and adults wanted to volunteer to help and the project became a backdrop to involve local students and others in science, leadership, and community education.

Due to the success of the environmental and civic education programs, City Council approved a plan in 2000 to create the Sturgeon City nonprofit and to repurpose the former wastewater treatment property along Wilson Bay into an environmental education campus. Since 2000, Sturgeon City has continued to expand its educational program offerings. In 2019, the nonprofit served approximately 10,000 students and adults through several types of programs including Camp Sturgeon, field trips, Homeschool Science, Little Learners, Parents Night Out, School's Out, Sturgeon City Institutes, and more. In addition to local youth and adults, we serve groups from the Southeast region and across the state.

The Sturgeon City Environmental Education Center opened in June of 2019 and has allowed Sturgeon City to continue serving our community and the region with educational programs as well as an event rental facility. Sturgeon City focuses on three key pillars of program and project development which are mission-driven events and programs, enterprise opportunities, and event management.
